Is it worth joining Whitehat Jr?

The year 2020 upended everyone’s life. We learned to live with the new normal having lots of restriction. Before 2020, did you ever think about sitting at home 24/7? but pandemic made us to do. At the earlier stage of lockdown, it was really terrific, after a couple of months of working from home, it has become a routine.

As a father of an 8-year-old kid, I could see him getting frustrated sitting all day at home. Smart phones started to consume his time, which I didn’t like. so, I was thinking about something that could have him engaged and at the same time useful and interesting. I happened to see Whitehat Jr ads on various platforms, to be frank, I couldn’t escape these ads, might be because of my computer background it caught my attention.

I asked my son, “Do you like to learn to code?”, He responded “Are you talking about Whitehat Jr?”, I was surprised and asked him whether he is interested to give it a try. The immediate answer from him was yes. So I booked a free trial class the next day and observed the way the teacher explained and his understanding. After the trial class, I spoke to my son about his interest to join the course.

I didn’t expect this course to make my kid a young entrepreneur, but coding concepts that he will learn in this course may help him in the future. I thought, as a father it’s my duty to give him the opportunity to learn new things. If he is interested he will take that to next level, if not it’s not his area. so without any expectation, I enrolled him in the course after his positive response to join.

In the beginning of course I was not sure whether an 8-year-old kid could understand the coding concepts and actually code?. but he proved me wrong. The course is designed like playing a game. Initially, it’s just dragging and drop the code blocks, gradually adding logic to those code blocks, which is really impressive. My kid showed interest not only in one to one classes but also in projects at the end of each class. I mean he showed real interest to learn new things every day. The quiz during and after the classes were really good. He was rewarded with claps and points, which motivated him immensely. I am happy that I introduced new learning to my kid during this Pandemic.

Pros :

1. One to One class is definitely an advantage, it gives both student and teacher undivided attention.
2. The course is designed carefully for kids to understand from basic level to advanced concepts.
3. The website is easy to navigate and instant replies from the support team.
4. Classes can be scheduled at your preferred date and time.
5. The teacher plays an important role, you have an option to have multiple trial classes until you find the right teacher for your kid. You can also change the teacher in between if the one you chose didn’t work well.

Cons :

1. The cost of each class is around 650 – 750 which is on the higher end.
2. A weekly leadership board displayed at the kid’s dashboard might pressurise the kid to take more classes in a week. (I prefer 3 classes per week)
3. At times, Kids might find it difficult if their parents are from non-IT backgrounds.

Verdict :

Whitehat Jr coding class really helps the kid to get knowledge on computers and coding. They actually learn the concepts and it will for sure help with their logical thinking and creativity.

If you can afford the cost, if your kid is really interested, if you don’t expect them to be an expert in coding or game development immediately after this course, if you believe you are planting a seed that will help for their future, then whitehat jr is a right choice.
